Medical & Sterile Heat Seal Paper

Medical & Sterile Heat Seal Paper
★★★★★ 4.9 Customer Satisfaction Score

Medical sterile packaging has to do something that sounds contradictory: let sterilising gas flow in and out freely, then block every microorganism for the entire shelf life, and finally peel open without shedding a single fibre into a sterile field. Ordinary paper does none of this. Medical-grade heat seal paper is engineered for exactly that contradiction. Custom Printed Papers supplies it for medical-device makers, sterilisation-pouch converters, and healthcare packers across the USA and Canada, as part of the custom heat seal paper range.

Medical heat seal paper is porous, medical-grade lidstock for sterilisation pouches and trays. Its controlled porosity lets steam or EO gas pass during sterilisation while blocking microorganisms afterward, and its peelable seal opens cleanly with minimal lint for aseptic presentation. It is built to ISO 11607 sterile-barrier requirements.

How porosity sterilises yet stays sterile

Medical paper is engineered with controlled porosity: pores small enough to block bacteria but open enough to let sterilising agents pass. During sterilisation, steam or ethylene oxide gas flows through the paper to kill microorganisms, then the same porous structure forms a microbial barrier that keeps the contents sterile until opening.

This dual function is the heart of a sterile barrier system. The paper is processed to close the large pores that could pass microorganisms while keeping enough permeability for the sterilant to penetrate and escape without leaving residue. It is the breathable, porous web on one side of a pouch, paired with a film on the other. That breathability is exactly why paper, not film, faces the steriliser.

Why a clean, low-lint peel is critical

Medical lidstock must peel open cleanly without shedding paper fibres, because loose lint can contaminate a sterile field or a device. Quality medical paper is made from virgin fibre and engineered for a clean peel that minimises airborne particles, delivering safe aseptic presentation when a clinician opens the pack.

In an operating theatre, the way a pack opens matters as much as how it sealed. A pack that tears or sheds fibres defeats the sterility it preserved. Medical papers, typically 60 to 70 gsm of primary virgin fibre, are specified for low linting and a smooth, even peel, often with a chevron or thumb-notch opening that starts the peel cleanly. The result is a device presented to the sterile field without contamination.

Which sterilisation method are you using?

The paper must match the sterilisation process. Steam autoclaving and ethylene oxide gas both need a porous, breathable paper that lets the sterilant penetrate, which is the medical paper’s core strength. Gamma and e-beam irradiation can use less porous constructions. Tell us your method, steam, EO, or irradiation, and we supply a grade validated for it, since using the wrong web can leave a load unsterilised or a barrier compromised.

    Standards and indicators that matter

Medical sterile packaging is governed by ISO 11607 for terminally sterilised devices and the EN 868 series for materials and pouches. Compliant paper meets physical requirements for air permeance, tensile, tear, and burst strength, and can carry printed process indicators that change colour to confirm a pack has been sterilised.

These standards are not optional in healthcare, and the paper is a documented part of compliance. We can supply medical-grade stock specified against ISO 11607 and EN 868-5, with the physical and barrier properties those standards require, plus surface-printed steam or EO process indicators that visibly differentiate a sterilised pack from an unsterilised one. We provide documentation to support your validation.

    Frequently asked questions

Why is medical paper porous? So steam or EO gas can pass through to sterilise the contents, while the pore structure still blocks microorganisms afterward.

Why does a clean peel matter? Loose fibres can contaminate a sterile field. Medical paper is made for a low-lint, clean peel for safe aseptic presentation.

What sterilisation methods does it suit? Porous grades suit steam and EO; other constructions suit gamma and e-beam. We match the grade to your method.

What standards apply? ISO 11607 and the EN 868 series. Compliant paper meets air-permeance, tensile, tear, and burst requirements.

Can it carry sterilisation indicators? Yes. Printed steam or EO process indicators change colour to confirm a pack has been processed.

What is the MOQ and turnaround? Orders start at 50 units, with a free proof and seal sample, in 4 to 6 business days.
