Peelable Lidding Paper
The best food lid does two opposite things at once: it seals tight enough to hold a vacuum or modified atmosphere through transport, then opens with a clean pull and no torn shreds when the customer wants in. That balance, hermetic but peelable, is engineered into the coating, not left to chance. Custom Printed Papers makes peelable lidding paper for ready-meal, dairy, deli, and portion-pack producers across the USA and Canada, as part of the custom heat seal paper range.
Peelable lidding paper is heat-seal-coated lidstock that forms a hermetic seal yet opens by a clean hand peel without tearing. It seals to PET and PP trays and cups, holds securely through storage and transit, then releases cleanly when peeled, making it the standard for easy-open food packaging.

How a lid seals tight yet still peels
A peelable seal is tuned so the bond is strong enough to stay hermetic in storage but weak enough to release cleanly by hand. The coating is engineered for a controlled peel force, measured in grams per inch, so the lid holds during transit yet opens without tearing the paper or the tray flange.
This is precision chemistry, not a compromise. The peel force is a target the coating is formulated to hit: too strong and the customer fights the lid or tears it, too weak and it pops open in transit. A good peelable lidstock holds a secure, often airtight seal that protects the product and its shelf life, then peels back in one clean motion. That reliable, repeatable peel is the whole value.
The same coating can weld, too
Dwell time controls the outcome. The same heat seal coating acts as a peelable seal at a shorter dwell time and forms a stronger weld seal as dwell time increases. This lets one lidstock run easy-open packs and tamper-proof packs on the same line, tuned by the sealing settings.
This flexibility is useful in a mixed operation. A line can run a peelable lid for a retail ready meal and a firmer weld for a pack that must not open accidentally, simply by adjusting dwell on the sealer. It also means dialling in your line matters: we supply the recommended temperature, pressure, and dwell window, and a sample so you can confirm the peel force you want before a full run. For permanent, security-first bonds, see blister lidding paper.
Matching the lid to your tray
Peelable lidding is substrate-specific, so the coating is chosen for the tray it seals to. A PET tray, a PP tray, and a mixed production line each need the right grade, and universal coatings exist that seal to most monolayer tray materials for packers running varied trays. Sealing windows differ too: a typical PET/PP peelable lid seals across roughly 95 to 145°C with a 1 to 3 second dwell. Tell us your tray material and seal temperature range, and we match the lidstock.
Anti-fog and barrier options
Two add-ons matter for chilled food. An anti-fog treatment stops condensation misting the underside of a clear or printed lid, keeping the product visible and appetising on shelf. A barrier layer extends shelf life by slowing oxygen and moisture transfer for modified-atmosphere packs. Both can be combined with the peelable seal, so the lid protects, preserves, and presents in one. Printed with your branding on the top face, it does that while carrying the logo.
Frequently asked questions
What is peelable lidding paper? Heat-seal-coated lidstock that seals hermetically to a tray or cup but opens by a clean hand peel without tearing.
How is peel strength controlled? The coating is formulated for a target peel force, and dwell time fine-tunes it from easy-peel to a firmer seal.
Can the same lid also weld permanently? Yes. A longer dwell time turns a peelable coating into a stronger weld seal on the same line.
What trays does it seal to? PET and PP trays and cups, with universal grades for mixed lines. The coating is matched to your tray.
Can it have anti-fog? Yes. Anti-fog and barrier options combine with the peelable seal for chilled, visible, longer-life packs.
What is the MOQ and turnaround? Orders start at 50 units, with a free proof and seal sample, in 4 to 6 business days.
Give customers a lid that seals tight and opens clean. Order custom peelable lidding paper on a 50-unit minimum, with a free proof and seal sample, and free shipping in 4 to 6 business days. Tell us your tray material to start.
