Compostable Chocolate Wrappers
“Eco-friendly” is easy to print and hard to prove. Compostable chocolate wrappers are the answer for brands that want a sustainability claim they can actually defend, with independent certification behind it, not just a green logo. Made from wood-pulp cellulose, these films protect chocolate as well as conventional plastic and then break down in a compost bin. Custom Printed Papers supplies them for sustainability-led chocolatiers across the USA and Canada, as part of the custom chocolate wrapping paper range.
Compostable chocolate wrappers are bio-based films made from renewable wood-pulp cellulose that protect chocolate and then compost at end of life. They offer a high moisture and oxygen barrier, natural dead-fold for twist-wrapping, and certification to EN13432 and ASTM D6400 compostability standards.

What compostable chocolate film is made of
These wrappers are cellulose films, the same family as classic cellophane, regenerated from responsibly sourced wood pulp rather than petrochemicals. The pulp, often fast-growing eucalyptus from FSC-managed plantations, is converted to a clear film that is typically 90% or more renewable raw material. At end of life it breaks down into CO2, water, and biomass. In industrial composting trials, leading cellulose films degrade by at least 90% within 45 days, and many grades are certified for home composting too, so the wrapper can go into a garden bin rather than landfill.
The certifications that turn a claim into proof
Genuine compostable wrappers carry independent certification: EN13432 for European industrial composting, ASTM D6400 for American standards, and TUV Austria OK Compost Home for home composting. These verify the film actually biodegrades rather than simply claiming it, which protects a brand against greenwashing accusations.
This is the part that matters most for a serious brand. Regulators and retailers increasingly demand proof, and consumers have learned to distrust vague eco language. A certified film lets a chocolatier state compostability with documentation behind it. Certified cellulose film is also generally not classified as plastic under single-use-plastic rules, which can carry a tax and compliance advantage over conventional film.
It protects the chocolate, not just the planet
Sustainability would mean nothing if the chocolate bloomed before it sold, and this is where modern compostable film has closed the gap. High-barrier cellulose grades deliver a moisture barrier approaching co-extruded OPP plastic, the best of any single-layer biopolymer film, plus a strong barrier to gases and aromas that protects flavour from oxidation and odour. A metallised version adds an even higher barrier with a foil-like look, while the metal layer is so thin, under 0.02%, that the film stays certified compostable. So a brand no longer trades protection for sustainability.
Compostable, glassine, or foil — which to choose?
All three move a brand toward better packaging, but they sit at different points.
| Material | Barrier | End of Life | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compostable cellulose film | High (near-OPP moisture, good gas/aroma) | Home/industrial compostable, certified | Eco brands needing real barrier + proof |
| Glassine | Moderate (grease, light moisture) | Recyclable, compostable | Dry chocolate, premium paper look |
| Foil-backed | Full (light, oxygen, moisture) | Poor recyclability | Maximum protection, long shelf life |
Choose compostable film when you need both a genuine barrier and a verifiable green claim. For a paper look with lighter protection, see glassine chocolate wrappers; for maximum barrier, see foil-backed chocolate paper.
Built for twist-wrap, ready for your brand
Cellulose film was originally developed for confectionery twist-wrap and still leads that use, because it has natural dead-fold and twists cleanly at the ends without springing open. It runs on twist-wrap machinery with a wide heat-seal window, and it takes print well, in clear or metallised form, for sharp branding. So a brand gets the classic twisted-end chocolate look, machine-line compatibility, and a compostable end of life in one material.
Frequently asked questions
Are compostable chocolate wrappers home-compostable? Many grades are, certified to TUV Austria OK Compost Home, so they break down in a garden bin. Others are industrial-compostable. We confirm per grade.
What certifications do they carry? EN13432 (Europe), ASTM D6400 (US), and OK Compost Home, which independently verify compostability.
Do they protect chocolate as well as plastic? High-barrier grades approach co-extruded OPP for moisture, with strong gas and aroma barriers, so protection is not sacrificed.
Can they be printed and twist-wrapped? Yes. They print in clear or metallised form and run on twist-wrap machinery with natural dead-fold.
Are they food-safe? Yes. They are food-grade and meet FDA 21 CFR 176.170 for direct chocolate contact.
What is the MOQ and turnaround? Orders start at 50 units, printed and shipped in 4 to 6 business days.
